Over the last few months with SoolNua, I’ve had the opportunity to really take a look at the current marketing landscape and the future of telling stories. Just type “Inbound Marketing” into Google and you’ll be catapulted into a storm of marketing blogs who more than likely are telling you things that you already know.
I know this because I’m writing for a marketing blog too.
Now, as a marketer, you could easily spit out all of the listicles you want. Just to be clear, I’m in no way bashing listicles. They’re easy to consume and we’ve even written one about iPhone photography stress management, and another one on Instagram filters. I’m sure that one day, I’ll even write a “top 5 reasons why having an office dog is so great” one.
They’re great pieces of content but you can do so much more when you can add an element that not many others do.
Let’s take a look at one of our case studies.
This year I had the honour of producing SoolNua’s 2018 St. Patrick’s Day video. Since 2014, SoolNua has produced a video each year for St. Patrick’s Day.
Back in 2014, the team decided to spread some holiday cheer by educating viewers on the history of St. Patrick and of course, about how my boss’s Irish wolfhound is a direct descendant. His name is Bear.
The following year, the team uses the day to jump in on Tourism Ireland’s Global Greening campaign. It’s pretty much the massive campaign behind all of the famous monuments across the world turning green once the 17th of March comes around. With Croke Park (the centre for Irish sport), as the backdrop, the authentic Irishness is hard to beat in this one.
I was actually studying abroad and living out in Kildare, Ireland in March 2016. I had no idea at the time that my future employers had the honour of working as quality controllers for the Irish National Greening Agency…which I’m sure is legitimate…right?
One year later, it looks like Patrick and Pádraic’s career with the National Greening Agency didn’t work out so well. Perhaps painting half of their faces green wasn’t in the employee handbook? For 2017, the #GoGreen4PatricksDay hashtag was introduced. What better way to spread the green than paint over an old ironic gate.
Iconic, sorry. Much like the iconic buildings that go green across the globe. You get me?
Out of all the things that surprised me after I joined the SoolNua team, nothing surprised me more than seeing an office full of green faces and a rusted green gate blocking the door to the office.
When I took on the responsibility of making this 2018 video, I thought I’d summarise my experience as an American intern and the horrors that went on in my head when I walked through the office that dreadful day.
I’m kidding of course. In reality, I just thought it’d be funny for them to bring back last year’s gate and to dress up the dog in a bright green shell thing.
With marketing, the most powerful tool you have is the ability to give potential clients and fans a reason to keep coming back. Stories naturally interest people. We love hearing about the good and the bad things that happen in everyday life.
